Telco and NFV use-cases bring a whole new set of requirements to a deployment scenario. From higher port count and faster packet speeds to lower latency and zero packet loss. Many virtualized environments using virtual machines turned to user-space networking to address these tougher requirements. User-space networking moves the packet processing out of the Linux kernel and into user-space using open-source projects like DPDK.

Telco industries are now looking to move to a Cloud-Native based architecture and are placing the same set of requirements on the container world. Intel, Nokia and Red Hat have joined forces to create a POC for a User Space CNI plugin that will allow containers to be deployed with user-space based interfaces. Attempting to be implementation agnostic, our POC is designed to work with multiple DPDK based implementations (currently OVS-DPDK and VPP).
