Simplify Distributed Rate-Limiting in Overlay Cloud Network with FDRL - Stephen Xu, Alibaba Cloud

For the public cloud high availability and elastic network capacity, gateway cluster with multiple instances deployment is the typical solution. Performing both load balancing and rate-limiting in multi-tenant overlay cloud network is so important, but it is also complex and difficult to implement. Normally, using static rate-limits at each gateway is not flexible and hard to elastic; another option may deploy dynamic rate-limits adjusted by a centralized controller, but it is so complex and hard to adjust the BW in real time and accurately. FDRL is a new lightweight design to implement in Alibaba cloud network. It relies on flowlets usage in overlay network, which is independent from underlay hardware network. This session will introduce FDRL, and explain the technology details based on Alibaba cloud network and outline the reference implementation in FD.io/VPP using an example demos.
