The overwhelming driver for the edge cloud is applications that benefit from low-latency response time, especially in support of Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Immersive UIs. But extending the cloud out from centralized datacenters to edge sites introduces two technical challenges. One is to construct service meshes that cross organizational boundaries. For example, the edge might in an enterprise (on-premises) or a Telco Central Office, while the datacenter often implies a commodity cloud. The second is to construct fine-grain service chains across this mesh on behalf of individual users, or possibly even individual flows. This talk addresses the combination of these two challenges -- how to construct fine-grain, end-to-end service chains in a multi-cloud environment -- and presents our work prototyping a solution based on a combination of CORD and the Google Cloud Platform.
