The emergence and progress of 5G demands a new computing model which involves extending computation and data processing from clouds and centralized data centers to the edge of networks. Decentralized, distributed and consensus properties that are inherent to Blockchain technology, enable trust and smart contracts that are essential to sustaining such dispersed and decentralized environments at scale. We will discuss how Blockchain technology may be leveraged for successful 5G deployments by service providers. We will propose how a distributed management framework designed on a blockchain may be adopted in lieu of decentralized management and orchestration. Perspectives on distributed applications, security and identity management will also be shared. The discussion will be accompanied by several use cases in the areas of SD-WAN, bandwidth optimization, AI/ML and automation.
